Growing Pains

I remember as a child waking up in the middle of the night with pain in my legs.  My mom would hear me groaning, come into my room, massage my legs and I would fall back to sleep.  It was my mom that got me through those days of growing pains.

I receive a piece of paper with a scripture written on it on the first day of our 21 Days of Fasting and Prayer in January from a woman in our church.  She said she wasn't sure exactly what it meant, but it was the verse that God placed on her heart. Here's what it said!

Isaiah 54:2-3 (NKJV)

2  “Enlarge the place of your tent, And let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings; Do not spare; Lengthen your cords, And strengthen your stakes.

Shortly after we finished our first day of corporate prayer I went went online to catch another church's live stream of their early morning prayer.  At the end of their prayer time a staff member got up and shared this verse.

1 Chronicles 4:10 (NKJV)

10 And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, “Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” So God granted him what he requested.

When we see verses of this nature our first thought is typically applied to the external. "Maybe it means seeing numerical growth!" I thought to myself, but as I meditated on the Scriptures, I sensed a leading just to allow those verses to marinate within me during this season of prayer.

Our series for January was "Brand New".  I began the series talking about being aware of the condition of our hearts. Everything we do eminates from our hearts.  Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth leaks!  David said, "Create in me a CLEAN HEART!"  I believe that is the beginning of a Brand New You!

Toward the end of our fast I came across a blog by Christine Caine.  Here are a few lines from that blog.

God is as big as he is ever going to be. The issue is are you going to make God big or are you going to make God small? How big is God on the inside of you?

What clutter is in your heart?  Is there bitterness? Is there unforgiveness? Is there undealt with offense? Are there issues in your past with your parents? Rejection issues? Abandonment issues? Insecurity issues?

What is on the inside of your heart that needs to be dealt with?  What are some attachments that you need to disengage from to make room for God to attach himself to you?

If I’m going to make room for God then I have to deal with stuff that is blocking God from being more involved in my life.

I believe that many of us will experience growing pains in the year 2015.  As we begin to deal with the clutter in our hearts it enlarges the territory in our hearts, makes more room for God, and strengthens us. It allows God to attach himself to us in a bigger way.

Be encouraged!  Just as my mom got me through my growing pains the Holy Spirit will be there to help us through our spiritual growing pains.

Enlarge the place of your tent by allowing God into those areas that we've kept him out of for so long.  Allow God's forgiveness to saturate the clutter and 2015 will be a year of expansion and strengthening our tent stakes!
