President Obama, ISIS, and The Church

President Obama's statement at the Prayer Breakfast:  "Unless we get on our high horse and think this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ."

President Obama's statement at a Press Conference: "Which passages of scripture should guide our public policy? Should we go with Leviticus, which suggests slavery is OK and that eating shellfish is an abomination? Or we could go with Deuteronomy, which suggests stoning your child if he strays from the faith?"

So while ISIS lines Christians up and beheads them our President tries his best not to say anything to get them upset.  That is the last thing you want to do to a bully.  It is naive to think that if we are nice to them they will be nice to us.  No doubt ISIS is infiltrating our country at alarming rates.

We are in grave danger of destroying ourselves from within!

Oh, I'm not talking about our nation.  I'm talking about the church!

Galatians 5:15 (AMP)  But if you bite and devour one another (in partisan strife), be careful that you (and your whole fellowship) are not consumed by one another.

Here's a great blog by Thom Rainer:  His first point was that bullies don't recognize themselves as being bullies.

ISIS doesn't see themselves as bullies either.  They are doing what they do in the name of their god.

One day, a pastor shared with me about a church where he had previously served.  There was a  group of people in the church who were not happy with the way he was leading.  The church had grown from 1200 to 3,700.  He had to keep his children from getting to the car first after church to ensure that they wouldn't see the nasty notes that members of the congregation would place on the car.  People would even call their house early in the morning (before cell phones) and his children would answer. The opposition would say, "Do you know your dad is a liar?"

I believe these people are doing what they do in the name of their God too!  This is not a new mindset.  The same thing happened to the disciples.

John 16:1-2 (NLT) I have told you these things so that you won't abandon your faith.  For you will be expelled from the synagogues, and the time is coming when those who kill you will think they are doing a holy service for God.

Seems like not much has changed since the early church. Maybe we aren't physically killing one another, but we are consuming one another with our words.

The church is in grave danger of destroying ourselves from within.  I suggest that we all take a step back and examine our hearts.

And for those who have been innocent bystanders, DON'T ABANDON YOUR FAITH!
